CALLAS
RE IMAGINED
“Callas Re-imagined" is a music, dance, and theater performance based on the stormy life ofthe legendary diva.
Maria Callas is resurrected on a dreamlike theater stage and relives moments from her mythical life by writing three letters: the first to her mother, the second to her lover, and the third to herself.
These memories set in motion her suppressed wishes, forgotten dreams, and poetic psyche, which always crash against harsh reality.
An actress, a solo dancer, and a four-person dance ensemble portray Callas as she gradually transforms from a young girl into the ultimate primadonna.
Themes from Bellini’s aria “Casta Diva” are persistently heard throughout the performance— hauntingly hidden or seamlessly blended into the original music — as Callas re-listens to the soundtrack of her turbulent life, thus
revealing a multifaceted, passionate woman: a tormented human being.
